Using Technology to Reduce Senior Feelings of Isolation
Using Technology to Reduce Senior Feelings of Isolation
Jan 24, 2023

Isolation can be a real drag on the spirit. It’s critical to check in with seniors regularly, especially during the holiday season when people of all ages may feel more alone. It can be particularly challenging for seniors who live far away from their families. Technology can provide many solutions to reduce feelings of isolation, from bringing family together in video calls to meeting new friends and discovering interesting activities nearby. But seniors may not be comfortable with new devices and applications. The following are some technology options specifically designed for seniors.

GrandPad

Staying connected with friends and family via the internet is part of daily life for most of us. However, not everyone is as tech-savvy as younger generations who grew up using computers, tablets, and smartphones. A company called GrandPad offers a tablet tailored to the needs of seniors so they can more easily stay in touch with family and friends.

The GrandPad connects to the internet via 4G LTE cellular service, so its users don’t have to worry about finding a Wi-Fi hotspot. It has simple features and a stylus pen with a touch screen. The screen has large icons that are easy to read and press and incorporates enhanced sound. Seniors with low dexterity or hearing and vision impairments can still enjoy sharing photos or participating in video calls. If they need help using the device, there is a customer service button and someone available 24/7 for questions.

Connecting In Real Life

Staying in touch with family members and friends via the internet can help seniors feel connected to the ones they love, but it is also important to spend time with people in person. To create an opportunity for seniors to meet people in person, some entrepreneurs have developed platforms to connect seniors with younger people in their communities.

One such platform is called Papa. It works with a seniors' health plan and is designed to provide social support and promote independence. On Papa, seniors can find a Papa Pal to enjoy activities together, including going for walks, running errands, and going to medical appointments.

Another platform, called Cyber-Seniors, connects teens and young adults with seniors for free technology training and support. Younger tech tutors are available throughout the United States and Canada. Seniors can register for online learning resources and activities like guided meditation, virtual trips, shopping, or exercise classes.

Staying Connected

Staying connected with family and friends in person or virtually is essential, as is meeting new people and learning new skills. Using the above resources, as well as others, will help seniors reduce feelings of isolation and contribute to their overall mental and physical wellbeing.
